The work in Mount Pleasant began in 2003 when Christians from several area churches began meeting on Sunday afternoons to discuss the viability of a work in Mount Pleasant. The Mount Pleasant Church of Christ was incorporated on November 6, 2003. Many have asked and we are happy to say that we did not start out of any dissatisfaction or dissension. The meeting location moved from the Dunes West Club House to Gerald’s Tire Store and then to the Holiday Inn in Mount Pleasant on April 4, 2004. We started with about 40 members.
Our first full time preacher began his work with us in October of 2005. We purchased our current property on May 8, 2008 and first met there on June 1, 2008. Our current full time evangelist, Mike Hipes, joined us in August of 2014.
Joe Bryant, Mike Hipes, Rob Liszt and John Melton were selected and appointed as elders of the Mount Pleasant church of Christ in May of 2016.
We strive to follow the pattern of the New Testament churches. Our bible studies and worship are simple and are intended to be orderly, reverent and encouraging. They typically last about an hour. We try to make everyone feel comfortable and welcome.
• A cappella Singing – Our singing is to teach, edify, and give thanks as instructed in Ephesians 5:15-21 and Colossians 3:16.
• Lord’s Supper – Sometimes called the “communion”, the Lord’s supper is taken on the first day of week in our congregation (Acts 20:7). The Lord instituted the supper with his apostles (Matthew 26:26-30, Mark 14:22-26 and Luke 22:14-20). Paul gave instructions to the early Christians in I Corinthians 11:23-26 saying “for whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” They took this in remembrance of Christ. We follow this New Testament pattern.
• Giving – Each week an offering is taken to support the work of our congregation. This is a freewill contribution of our membership. Visitors should feel no obligation to give. I Corinthians 16:2 says “On the first day of every week, each of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.”
We will be most happy to discuss any questions you may have. Our desire is to live our lives and serve our Lord according to His word.
